ANGER: Appropriate or Inappropriate? A recent poll says that 69% of Americans are either very or somewhat angry about how things are going in our country. God’s Word has a great deal of wisdom for us about the roots of anger, when it is appropriate, and how to overcome inappropriate anger. Prayer to Become Like Christ We praise You, Almighty God, for You are rich in mercy. When we were dead in our sin, You made us alive in Christ. Because of Your great love, You desire to conform us into the likeness of your Son Jesus. Thank You for Your Holy Spirit, who is transforming us to have the same attitude and mind as Christ. Help us to love the way He loves; to humble ourselves as He humbled Himself; and to trust and obey as Christ did in all things. Enable us to see people the way He does; to confront hypocrisy as He did; and to freely forgive just as Christ forgives us. Guard us from quenching Your work in our lives, and help us stay in step with the Holy Spirit each day. May we be ever changing into the likeness of Christ Jesus, in whose name we pray. Amen. 2023 Lent Sermon Series & "Revival Bootcamp" God is moving! We see this at Asbury College and other campuses, and also inside our own church. Both Pastor Nile and I sense that God is pouring out His Spirit. So how do we enter into a move of God? Every revival is characterized by repentance . In the 2019 Book of Common Prayer, the invitation to Lent is to the observance of a holy Lent: by self-examination and repentance ; by prayer, fasting, and alms-giving; and by reading and meditating on God’s holy Word. These godly practices will help prepare us for a move of God. So, Lent is an ideal time to prepare and equip ourselves for an outpouring of God’s Spirit. In our Lenten program, we will lay out a biblical foundation for revival each Sunday, followed by how to experience it each Wednesday. For example, we will teach about healing one Sunday; then at that Wednesday’s “Boot Camp for Revival,” we will learn to pray for people to be healed and experience healing ourselves. Prayer of General Thanksgiving Almighty God, Father of all mercies, we your unworthy servants give you humble thanks for all your goodness and loving-kindness to us and to all whom you have made. We bless you for our creation, preservation, and all the blessings of this life; but above all for your immeasurable love in the redemption of the world by our Lord Jesus Christ; for the means of grace, and for the hope of glory. And, we pray, give us such an awareness of your mercies, that with truly thankful hearts we may show forth your praise, not only with our lips, but in our lives, by giving up our selves to your service, and by walking before you in holiness and righteousness all our days; Through Jesus Christ our Lord, to whom, with you and the Holy Spirit, be honor and glory throughout all ages. SERVING THE COMMUNITY Our Lord has called us to serve those around us as Christ has served us. Messiah is involved in a number of seasonal and year-round ministries to our local community. If you would like more information about any of these ministries, please contact the church office . Chesapeake Area Shelter Team (C.A.S.T) For a number of years, Church of the Messiah has provided a week of shelter and meals for the homeless during the winter sheltering season from November through March. CAST week is an all-church effort, as host churches provide and serve meals, play cards and board games with guests, entertain children, stay overnight to ensure a restful night for our guests, and perform daily cleanup. No special skills or experience are necessary to get involved with this compassionate ministry. Inreach/Outreach Committee The Outreach/Inreach Committee serves to minister to those in financial need in our local and extended community. Messiah supports a number of Christian-based organizations, and also seeks to minister to those within the congregation who are experiencing temporary financial difficulties. Operation Christmas Child Operation Christmas Child, sponsored by Samaritan's Purse Ministries, brings joy and hope to children in desperate situation worldwide through gift-filled shoe boxes and the Good News of God's love. Church of the Messiah collects items such as small toys, school supplies and hygiene items each fall, then, with the help of our children, packs the boxes to be shipped all over the world. Joyful Noise Club Our club for young people with disabilities currently meets online via Zoom every Tuesday evening at 7:00 p.m. Club members hear a special message or teaching and then enjoy a time of discussion and sharing. A game or activity is often included, where participants are asked to bring a special item or topic to share with everyone online. Everyone is welcome to join the fun! For more information, contact the church office. Sanctuary of Hope Church of the Messiah has a close relationship with Sanctuary of Hope, a pentecostal church community in Portsmouth. HOW TO ASK JESUS TO BE YOUR SAVIOR God made you. And God loves you! No one lives a perfect life or does everything they should. Everyone needs forgiveness. For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life. (John 3:16) Everyone deserves to be punished. We've all failed to love God and others. We need God's gift of Jesus. For all have sinned; all fall short of God's glorious standard. (Romans 3:23) God sent Jesus to take our punishment and die for us. For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life through Christ Jesus our Lord. (Romans 6:23) Jesus came alive and rose from the dead. But God showed his great love for us by sending Christ to die for us while we were still sinners. (Romans 5:8) Open the door of your heart to Jesus. Jesus said, "Look! Here I stand at the door and knock. If you hear me calling and open the door, I will come in, and we will share a meal as friends." (Revelation 3:20) You can pray a prayer similar to this one: Thank you, Jesus, for dying on the cross for me. Please forgive all I've done wrong. Come into my life and be my Savior. Thank you for loving me and giving me eternal life. Fill me with your Holy Spirit and help me live for you. Amen. As soon as you ask Jesus for his forgiveness, you can be sure he forgives you. Trust God's promise that Jesus is your Savior and that you have a home in heaven. For if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. (Romans 10:9)

May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit. - Romans 15:13 According to Scripture, hope is confident expectation in the certainty of God's faithfulness to fulfill his promises. Our sermon series will explore various facets of hope that empower us to live victoriously as witnesses for Christ in the midst of life's trials and tribulations.
